Charlton Returned to New Zealand in 1991 and began exhibiting through the country within a few months. He was briefly represented by Aberhart North Gallery but increasingly found the constraints of the dealer gallery system inhibiting. The majority of Exhibitions from this point on are for public institutions.
Charlton was key member of the group that established ASA school of art the first private arts school in New Zealand. As head of Sculpture he navigated the Schools integration into the AUT University where he continued teaching until taking up a new roll in Creative Technologies in 2005.
